What is Silent Birth?

Silent birth was a concept originally put forward by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard and is about helping expectant mothers to "be given the utmost in care and respect".

“Everyone must learn to say nothing within the expectant mother’s hearing during labor and delivery. Particularly during birth, absolute silence must be maintained and the more gentle the delivery, the better.” - L Ron Hubbard

The reason that L Ron Hubbard believed silent birth to be better for child and mother is because he theorised that words spoken during times of extreme pain and stress can lead to nightmares and fears in later life.

Silent birth means simply that no words are spoken during the delivery - although anything else normal during a newborn's delivery can continue accordingly, including such interventions as painkillers and medical procedures.

Although Scientologists argue that medical professionals and scientists back up this theory and say it is better for mother and baby, no actual medical or scientific proof has been given that this practice harms or helps participants in the birth.

However in a society where increasing numbers of attendants and support people are often present at a birth, it's not unlikely that less or no talking can lead to a labor with much less stress and a more calming environment for the mother, at least.
